Sports and healthy lifestyle

Sport plays an important role in the life of teenagers. Those people who go in for sports, lead a healthy lifestyle, follow a diet and control their weight tend to be more cheerful and are less susceptible to diseases. On the other hand, those people who don’t participate in any physical activity and prefer junk food tend to be subjected to obesity and are at risk of heart and vascular diseases. As a matter of fact, the problem of obesity is one of the most pressing in the modern world. Today more and more teenagers are becoming overweight. One solution that can be put forward is doing sports, which can help teens not only to lose excessive weight and to stay fit, but also to feel more vigorous and spirited throughout the day. Physical exercises are also the perfect way for emotional release. To improve school performance it is essential for school children to balance mental stimulation and physical activity. Besides, it is necessary to mention that supporters of healthy life style are also at much less risk of getting involved in drinking alcohol, taking drugs and other bad habits than those who are addicted to computer games, instead. In addition, sports develop the will for victory, as well as caseharden the constitution and the spirit. Sports also create opportunities to find congenial souls with common interests and values. That feeling that you are a part of the team can help to develop your leadership skills and to boost your self-esteem.

The most popular team sports for teenagers are football, volleyball, basketball and tennis. However, some youngsters prefer winter sports, such as figure-skating, ice-hockey and skiing, while others are fond of summer sports, including diving, swimming, yachting and rafting.

As far as I am concerned, I do like sports. I usually wake up at 7 a. m. and go for a run or do my morning exercises indoors. Twice a week I take my fitness classes and go to the swimming pool. I am also fond of yoga which teaches me how to take care of my body properly and how to stay healthy, flexible and strong. In summer I like to play badminton and volleyball with my friends, while in winter I go to the skating rink. As for dieting, I am a follower of separate nutrition. When you eat separately you can eat almost anything but

not at the same time. For instance, for breakfast I prefer a plate of oatmeal, a glass of orange juice and two apples. As is known, “an apple a day keeps a doctor away”. For dinner I can eat fresh vegetables and some steamed fish. Besides, I prefer mineral water and fresh juices to fizzy drinks.

In conclusion, a healthy person doesn’t smoke, eats healthy food and prefer doing sports to watching them.

Спорт играет важную роль в жизни подростков. Те люди, которые занимаются спортом, ведут здоровый образ жизни, контролируют свой вес и соблюдают диету, обычно более жизнерадостные и менее подвержены болезням. В то время как те, кто, предпочитает фаст-фуд и не занимается спортом, более склонны к ожирению и находятся в группе риска сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний. Следует отметить, что проблема ожирения является одной из самых актуальных в современном мире. Сегодня все больше и больше подростков страдают от излишнего веса. Одним из решений этой проблемы могут служить занятия спортом, которые помогут подросткам не только сбросить лишние килограммы и сохранить хорошую физическую форму, но также почувствовать себя более бодрыми и энергичными в течение всего дня. Физические упражнения – это также идеальный способ эмоциональной разгрузки. Чтобы улучшить успехи в учебе, ученикам необходимо сбалансировать умственную и физическую деятельность. Кроме того, следует упомянуть о том, что сторонники здорового образа жизни менее подвержены таким дурным привычкам, как злоупотребление алкоголем, наркотиками, чем те, кто с утра до вечера играет в компьютерные игры. Кроме всего прочего, спорт развивает волю к победе, закаляет тело и дух. То чувство, что ты являешься частью команды, помогает сформировать лидерские качества и поднять самооценку. Спорт также дает возможность расширить круг знакомых и найти близких по духу людей со схожими интересами и ценностями.

Самыми популярными видами спорта для подростков являются футбол, волейбол, баскетбол и теннис. Однако некоторые из них предпочитают зимние виды спорта, такие как фигурное катание, хоккей и лыжи, в то время как другие отдают предпочтение летним видам спорта, включай дайвинг, плавание, парусный спорт и рафтинг.

Что касается меня, я очень люблю спорт. Обычно я просыпаюсь в 7 утра, выхожу на пробежку или делаю зарядку дома. Два раза в неделю я хожу в фитнес-клуб и бассейн. Я также увлекаюсь йогой, которая учит меня правильно заботиться о моем организме и оставаться здоровой, гибкой и сильной. Летом я люблю играть в бадминтон и волейбол с моими друзьями, в то время как зимой я хожу на каток. Что касается диеты, то я приверженец раздельного питания, при котором можно есть практически все продукты, но в разное время. К примеру, на завтрак я предпочитаю овсяную кашу, апельсиновый сок и пару яблок. Как известно, “кто яблоко в день съедает, у того доктор не бывает”. На обед я могу съесть свежие овощи и рыбу на пару. Кроме того, я предпочитаю минеральную воду и свежевыжатые соки газированным напиткам.

В заключение хотелось бы сказать, что здоровый человек – это тот, кто не курит, правильно питается и предпочитает заниматься спортом, а не быть зрителем.

Each group did a lot of work on its part of the project. Let’s begin.

Учитель английского языка: - Now we start. On the screen you see the diagram, about lifestyles. Look at this side. (слайд 2) What positive associations do you remember speaking about lifestyle? (ученики выполняют задание на английском языке). Какие еще негативные факторы, на ваш взгляд, влияют на индивидуальное здоровье?

Text1.1 OLYMPIC GAMES

The world's greatest international sports games are known as the Olympic Games.

The Olympic idea means friendship, fraternity and cooperation among the people of the world. The Olympic Movement proves that real peace can be achieved through sport. The Olympic emblem is five interlinked rings: blue, yellow, black, green and red. Any national flag contains at least one of these colours.

The original Olympic Games began in ancient Greece in 776 B.C. These games were part of a festival held every fourth year in honour of God Zeus at the place called Olympia. It was a great athletic festival, including competitions in wrestling, foot racing and chariot racing, rowing and others. The games were for men only. Greek women were forbidden not only to participate but also to watch the Olympics.

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Then they were resumed in London after the Second World War. Since then the Olympics are held every fourth year in different countries.

The ancient Greeks had no winter sports. Only in 1924 the first Winter Olympic Games were held in France. Now they are being held regularly.

Text 1.2.A Brief History of the Olympic Games

When it began

According to historic records, the first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. In Olympia, Greece. By 676 B.C. the Games included Greeks from every corner of the Greek world. The Games were held every four years in honour of the king of the gods, Zeus. It is reported that there was only one event in the very earliest Olympiad: the 200-yard sprint.

A time-line of the Olympic Games

For 1000 years, the Games were at regular intervals of four years. Special messengers were sent out in every direction to announce the beginning of the Games and to signal an end of all disputes and wars until after the Games. The Modern Olympic Games are still held every fourth year, but were interrupted in 1916, 1940 and 1944 by World War.

Text2.1 Sport in our life

People all over the world are fond of sports and games. Sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit, more organized and better disciplined. It unites of different classes and nationalities. Many people do sports on their personal initiative. They go in for skiing, skating, table tennis, swimming, volleyball, football, bodybuilding, etc.

All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sports grounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, skiing stations, football fields.

Sport is paid much attention to in our educational establishments. Gymnastics is a part of children's daily activities in the kindergartens. Physical culture is a compulsory subject at schools and colleges.

Professional sport is also paid much attention to in our country. In city, where I live, there are different sporting societies, clubs and complexes. If you want to keep fit, you must go in for one kind of sport or another. We all need exercise. This is true for younger as well as for adults. Even if you don’t plan make sports your main occupation.

Practically all kinds of sports are popular in our country, but football, gymnastics and tennis enjoy the greatest popularity. It keeps a person in a good form.

Many people never exercise. They often eat unhealthy food as well. These people wait until they get sick about their health .

In our family, we believe that preventing sickness is better than trying to cure it after you get sick. My mother once told me that there were three ways to prevent illness. They are:

1) eating well;

2) avoiding stress;

3)exercising regularly

I also enjoy staying fit with my family. At home, we eat fresh fruit and vegetables very day. We all love to swim and play tennis. Bicycle – riding is good exercise, it also helps to clear me head and relieve stress after a long day.

British people are very fond of sport .Sport is part of their normal life. The two most popular games are football and cricket.

Football, also called soccer, is the most popular sport in the United Kingdom.

England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own Football Leagues and national teams. Games are played on Saturday afternoons from August to April. In addition to the FL (футбольной лиги ) games there is a competition called the Football Association Cup. The Cup Final is played at Wimble Stadium (London) in May.

Cricket is considered to be the English National game. Its rules are very complicated. It is played by two teams of eleven men each, the player at a time tries to him the ball with a bat. Americans are very fond of sport. The most popular sports in the USA are football, which is played from April to October, baseball, played from September to December, basketball, played from October to April and ice hockey, played in most northern cities from October to March.

American football derives from the English game of rugby. It started at Harvard at Harvard University in the 1870's. It is a game for two teams of eleven men on the field. The object of the game is to have the control of the ball and to score points by carrying it across the goal line.

Baseball is a team game derived from the English game of cricket. It is played with a bat and ball by two teams of nine players each, on a field with four bases. Baseball is the national game in the USA and it is very popular in Canada too.

Basketball is a game which nowadays is popular all over the world. It was invented in 1891. During the 20's the first US league championship was organized. In the 70's the American Championship was divided into two leagues: the ABA (American Basketball Association), which does not exist any longer and which played with a blue, red and white ball and the NBA (National basketball Association).

The NBA is a professional league which still plays.

There are more activities which Americans take part in such as golf, swimming, tennis, aerobics, wrestling, etc.

It is widely known that life expectancy is increasing. But the reason why the average figures are higher than they used to be, say, hundred years ago is not that all people live longer than before. One reason is that, due to medical research, many illnesses were eliminated; the second one is that fewer people die in wars. Generally, the life of modern man is endangered by many factors. One is the increasing pollution of the environment by industry and transport; another one is sedentary lifestyle of people living in cities and towns. The third one is the quality of food we eat and water we drink which results in a lot of diseases. Unhealthy life results in the fact that many people are overweight

The only possible way of preserving your health is healthy way of life , which includes keeping fit, balanced meals, and giving up unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking alcohol, and, of course, drugs.

Physical fitness is a general state of good physical health. For anyone who really wants to be healthy, fitness has become an integral part of their lives. The fitness boom resulted in a rise in the numbers of people participating is sports and sports activities. It is a well-known fact that even moderate physical activity can protect you from heart diseases and strokes, obesity and influenza. There are many ways of keeping fit. Firstly, you could visit health and fitness clubs. A lot of health and fitness clubs, public leisure centers, huge indoor water parks are very popular among people of all ages. Secondly, regular exercise is necessary. People of different ages can choose or design exercises that will fit them. Some people do aerobics or yoga; others prefer weight training in a gym. A healthy diet is an important part of staying healthy, too. This diet contains reduced amounts of cholesterol, fat, sugar and salt. It helps protect our body from a wide range of diseases; the most dangerous are heart diseases, liver diseases, and cancer.

Everybody knows smoking is hazardous for your health and can lead to fatal diseases like cancer. Smoking should undoubtedly be banned in all public places.

Text3.2. Healthy way of life.

Scientists say that in the future people will live longer. With healthier lifestyles and better medical care the average person will live to 90 or 100 instead of 70 and 75 like today. When the human genome is decoded, we'll probably live up to 150. Incurable diseases will be cured and "bad" genes replaced.

But that's tomorrow. And today, we continue to stuff ourselves with fast food — chips and pizzas, hamburgers and hot dogs. We are always in a hurry. We have no time to enjoy a home-cooked dinner with family and friends. We want to eat now and we want to eat fast. What is tasty is not always healthy. Doctors say that chips and pizzas are fattening, cola spoils our teeth and coffee shortens our lives.

If we eat too much, we'll become obese, and obesity leads to heart disease, diabetes and other serious illnesses. But the world today is getting fatter and fatter. America is the world's leader in obesity, but Europe is quickly catching up.

Lack of exercise is another serious problem. We spend hours in front of our computers and TV-sets. Few of us do morning exercises. We walk less, because we prefer to use cars or public transport. Research shows, however, that young people who don't take enough exercise often suffer from heart attacks.

Stresses are an essential part of being alive — but the art of life is to arrange rules that stress does not become strain. A healthy organism is extremely tough. It can withstand overwork, fatigue, anxiety, microbes — up to a certain point, of course

It's common knowledge that smoking and drinking can shorten our lives dramatically. Cigarette-smoking, for example, kills about 3 million people every year. Many of them die from lung cancer. Some aren't even smokers. They are people who live or work with heavy smokers. Yet many young people smoke and drink. Why? One answer is that tobacco and drinks companies invest enormous sums of money in advertising their products. For them cigarettes and alcoholic drinks mean money. For us they mean disease and even death.

We all know that the healthier we are, the better we feel. The better we feel, the longer we live. So why not take care of ourselves?

Text 3.4 Health. .

Good health is very important for very person. Still, sometimes we get ill, we call a doctor, and he examines us and diagnoses the illness. When we have a headache, a stomach ache, a sore throat, a cold, or a pain in some parts of the body, we call a doctor. He takes our temperature and our pulse. He examines our heart, our lungs, our stomach or the part where we have pain, and tells us what the matter is with us. The doctor prescribes medicine, and gives us a prescription, which we take to the chemist's, who makes up the medicine.

If you follow the doctor's orders, you get better; if you disobey the doctor, you may get worse, and even die. We must obey the doctor, if we want to get better. If we have a temperature, we must stay in bed and take the medicine he prescribes. If we cannot get better at home we must go to hospital. If we are too ill to walk, we go to hospital in the ambulance. After our illness we can go to a sanatorium until we are strong again.

When we have toothache, we go to the dentist's. He examines our teeth, finds the tooth which hurts us, stops or extracts it.

In our country health system incorporates a variety of medical institutions. The medical service is of two kinds. Some state establishments give their employees medical insurance cards. They guarantee the people free of charge medical assistance. Some medical establishments charge fees for treatment. They may be rather high, but our medical service now uses all modern equipment and medicines and provides qualified medical help to all people.

Text 3.5 Keeping Fit.

The fitness boom of the past decades led to a big rise in the numbers of people participating in sports and other physical activities. A healthy body becomes a fashion, an ideal of the life of today. Those who pursue the latest fitness fashion are convinced that staying in good physical form requires much more than regular exercise and balanced meals. For anyone who really wants to be healthy, fitness has become an integral part of their lives.

There are many opportunities for keeping fit. First of all, it is necessary to do exercises. People of different ages can design exercises that will fit them. Running, jumping, swimming, bending and stretching are among the most popular exercises. Many people prefer jogging, which is the cheapest and the most accessible sport. Walking is a very popular activity too. Even moderate physical activity can protect against heart disease and strokes as well as improve general health and the quality of life.

Everyone can benefit from being a little more active. Making small changes like using the stairs instead of the lift or walking or cycling instead of taking the bus can help people live a more active, healthier and enjoyable life.
